When You Look at Me

When you look at me, what do you see?
From your lofty eyrie of respectability
Do you see the man I am? Or the man I could be
As you scurry on back to your family.
When you look at me, what do you see?
Blank eyes, special brew, dirty fingers, hidden scars
Yes, they are part of me now, but not always

When you look at me, what do you see?
A person with life together, even perfect maybe?
Do you see the mask I wear, or beyond to the real me
As I hurry on home to my family.
When you look at me, what do you see?
Nice clothes, shopping bags, money and keys
Yes, they are a part of me now, but not always

When you look at me, what do you see?
Because you can’t see the deep secrets I carry within
Of the things I know, what I’ve done and have seen
So maybe we’re not really so different – you and me
And maybe neither should judge without knowing the real deal.

So when we look at each other what do we see?
We just see each other and that’s how it should be.
No pretence, no disguise, no props and no gear
Just people, connecting, with nothing to fear.
