C20th Auction - 20 September 2008

Saturday September 20th will see a new venture here at the Community. As well as the shop being open as normal, Cambridge auctioneers Cheffins have kindly agreed to help us organise an auction of 20th Century glass, ceramics, pottery and paintings.

It will be held in a separate marquee with a viewing period in the morning from 9-12 and the auction will start at 12 midday.

We already have some fine items (particularly of top quality designer glass) but would love more. If you have items you would like to donate to the auction please call or email Jane or Debbie on or call on 01223 863657 extension 3. We will be happy to collect locally. We also plan to approach some local galleries and artists to see if they will be willing to support us.

We have wanted for a long time to establish a bursary for senior companions to enable them, when they are ready, to broaden their horizons.  The fund will be called the ‘Waterson Bursary’ in honour of Ian Waterson who lived and worked with us here at Emmaus Cambridge in our early years. Ian sadly died several years ago but was always a champion of companions making efforts to get back on their feet.

Further details about the auction will be posted on our website over the weeks to come and catalogues will be available from the beginning of September. Please contact us if you want to know more.

Solidarity Sale for Emmaus International

We held a special one-day Solidarity Sale on Saturday 2 August  with at 50% off all second-hand goods on sale in our Landbeach warehouse. The aim of the day was to raise funds to support the work of Emmaus International and was part of a Worldwide Sale, in which more than 300 Emmaus communities throughout the world generated funds to support projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and America and we were able to raise £6,500 thanks to our supporters.

Money raised will be spent on improving the everyday living conditions of people, particularly on the African Continent and in Asia, with the priority being to provide access to water in areas without basic amenities.

Emmaus International will also encourages people all over the developed world to commit to ethical banking and to say no to contemporary slavery. It is a huge challenge for us all and we are encouraged that Emmaus communities throughout the world have been able to come together to work to highlight these issues. Unlike the communities, Emmaus International does not have a trading operation so has to rely on the communities’ generosity to fund its major projects.

Solidarity Sales

This year we will be holding Solidarity Sales on three dates in 2008.  These are:-

Saturday 31 May to raise funds to support Emmaus communities in the United States of America.  We have supported the group at Emmaus h.o.m.e in Maine for some years now but this year will also be sharing the proceeds from this date to support the new community setting up in Jacksonville, Carolina.

Saturday 2 August to raise funds for Emmaus International.  As a member of Emmaus International we commit to donating the proceeds from one day's sales to form part of their fund for undertaking their work throughout the world.  Unlike the Emmaus communities, Emmaus International does not have a shop in order to generate their funds and therefore the communities throughout the world willingly raise the money for their important work.

Saturday 27 September to raise fund for Emmaus Lublin, in Poland.  Regular customers will be aware of the link we have built with this community over recent years and some of you may have some of the Polish furniture at home.  Although they are a much smaller community than Cambridge, Emmaus Lublin also supports work undertaken by Emmaus Oselya in Lviv, Ukraine so this Solidarity Sale in particular shows how support can cascade down through larger Emmaus communities to smaller.

Further information on the sales will be added nearer the date.
